Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth was founded in 1820. Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama were amongst the first European explorers to visit this area. This area had for a long time been marked on navigation as a landing place with fresh water. The town Uitenhage which previously formed part of Graaf Reinet and Dispatch was soon incorporated into the now new Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality.
This city provides the conveniences of a big city and at the same time the restfulness and tranquility of country life. P.E is the commercial capital and the second oldest city in the Eastern Cape. This province is the birth place of Nelson Mandela, is a major sea-port and an important centre for the South African motor industry. Nelson Mandela is not the only famous person from this city but various rugby players and cricket players are also some of the famous people from Port Elizabeth.
